How to Keep Pets Safe in Spring

The weather will start warming up before we know it, which means pet parents are going to want to get out there and be active soon enough.

To help make sure pet parents know how to have fun in the sun with Fido, Camp Bow Wow Myrtle Beach owner, Gerry Leighton, sat down with WMBF News to discuss some of the best ways to keep dogs frolicking without getting into trouble. (And she brought along 2-year old Harper, a dog up for adoption at The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach, too!)

5 Tips to Keep Pets Safe Outdoors in Spring

1. Be mindful of the heat. Gerry suggests going out in the morning or at night when the temperatures are coolest.

2. Have plenty of fresh water. Just like humans, dogs can become dehydrated easily. It’s important to have fresh water available so they don’t drink from contaminated puddles along the path.

3. Apply doggy sunscreen. Yup, it exists! And it’s important to apply to the inner ears, nose, mouth or lips, and bellies of pups before they play in the sun.

4. Use dog-friendly sunscreen only. Dog sunscreen is formulated specifically with dogs in mind. Human sunscreen can be toxic if licked.

5. Be careful with summer haircuts. Many pet parents choose to lighten the load with a haircut as summer hits. That’s all fine and well, as long as they don’t cut Fido’s hair so short that his skin is exposed to the sun.

The best way to keep dogs safe while also allowing them to enjoy the blissful sights and smells of spring? By bringing them to Camp!
