Seasonal Safety Tips: Keeping Your Pets Cozy and Safe

Dear Pet Parents,
As winter settles in, it’s essential to keep your pups safe, warm, and healthy. Here are some tips to help them enjoy the season:
  1. Protect Paws: Use booties or wipe paws after walks to avoid irritation from ice and salt. Check for cracks or soreness regularly.
  2. Stay Warm: Provide a cozy indoor spot and consider a sweater for smaller or short-haired dogs.
  3. Hydration Matters: Ensure access to fresh water to prevent dehydration, even in winter.
  4. Holiday Hazards: Keep harmful foods, decorations, and tree ornaments out of reach.
  5. Fireplace and Heater Safety: Supervise space heaters and screen off fireplaces to prevent accidents.
  6. Indoor Fun: Use interactive toys, training, or visits to Camp Bow Wow for exercise during colder days.
  7. Ease Holiday Stress: Maintain routines and create quiet spaces for pets to relax amidst the festivities.
Stay safe and enjoy the season!

Fall & Halloween Dog Safety Tips from Camp Bow Wow Towson

As the crisp fall air rolls in, we know how exciting the season can be – from beautiful foliage to fun Halloween celebrations. But while you're preparing for the seasonal festivities, it's important to remember that autumn can also bring some unique challenges when it comes to your dog's safety. Here are a few tips to keep your furry friends happy and healthy this fall:

1. Beware of Toxic Treats

Halloween brings plenty of candy, but many sweets can be harmful to dogs. Chocolate, artificial sweeteners like xylitol, and raisins are dangerous and even life-threatening if ingested. Keep all candy out of your dog’s reach, and ensure they have their own dog-safe treats to enjoy while the trick-or-treaters come around.

2. Stay Visible on Walks

As days get shorter, you'll likely find yourself walking your dog in the dark more often. Make sure your pup is visible by using reflective gear, LED collars, or glow-in-the-dark leashes. This will keep both you and your dog safe from traffic and help you keep track of them in low-light conditions.

3. Leaf Piles Hide Hazards

Jumping in piles of leaves is one of the best parts of fall for kids and dogs alike! However, leaf piles can also harbor hidden dangers, such as sharp objects, mold, and ticks. Always check the area before letting your dog romp through those crunchy leaves.

4. Costume Comfort

Dressing your dog up for Halloween? While costumes can be adorable, they should never restrict your dog's movement, breathing, or visibility. Always check for signs of discomfort or anxiety when your dog is in costume, and if they seem unhappy, opt for a simple festive bandana or collar instead.

5. Trick-or-Treating Safety

The constant doorbell ringing and strangers in costumes can be stressful for dogs. If your dog tends to get anxious or over-excited, it's a good idea to keep them in a quiet room away from the commotion during trick-or-treating hours. You can also bring them to Camp Bow Wow Towson, where they can enjoy a safe, fun environment while you handle the trick-or-treaters.

6. Cold Weather Prep

With cooler temperatures on the horizon, make sure your dog is ready. Short-haired breeds may need a sweater or jacket to stay warm during walks. Additionally, check your dog's paws for cracks or dryness, which can worsen as temperatures drop.
