Our obedience program is split into multiple levels, so pups start with the basics and increase the difficulty through each level as you and your dog progress. Other group classes include tricks, leash-walking skills, CGC prep, and more!

Participating in group classes not only socializes your dog but also allows you to learn from other pet parents’ experiences and challenges. It's an enriching community experience where dogs improve their social cues, and owners gain insights into managing multiple dog dynamics effortlessly.

The three levels of our obedience classes are:

  • Level I—Basic: Builds the foundation of reliable commands like sit, down, leave it, come when called, and leash walking.
  • Level II—Intermediate: Learn how to get your dog to heel by your side, go to their mat, and add distance plus distractions to all their behaviors.
  • Level III—Public Polishing/CGC Prep: This level teaches your dog to sit when you greet a stranger, heel in a crowd, and more. They will now be prepared for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) exam.

Each curriculum is designed to not only improve obedience but also enhance your dog's confidence and adaptability in various environments, making public outings more enjoyable for both of you.

Frequently Asked Questions on Dog Training

How Do I Know if My Dog Needs Training?

Every dog can benefit from training regardless of age, breed, or size. If you're facing challenges such as excessive barking, pulling on the leash, or not coming when called, these are signs that your dog may benefit from formal training. Even well-behaved dogs need continual training to keep skills sharp and personality balanced. Training is also a great opportunity for mental stimulation, providing your dog with challenges that keep them engaged, reducing boredom-induced behavior problems.

At What Age Should I Start Training My Dog?

Training can begin as soon as you bring your puppy home, typically around 8-10 weeks old. Early training helps to set a foundation for good behavior and aids in the socialization process. For older dogs, it's never too late to start training. Older dogs can learn new tricks, and with the right approach, they can make just as much progress as younger dogs. At Camp Bow Wow Kansas City Northland, we tailor our programs to cater to dogs of all ages.

What Training Methods Do You Use?

We use positive reinforcement methods to reward desired behaviors. This approach is both effective and humane, strengthening the bond between you and your pet while encouraging repeat behaviors. Positive reinforcement is recognized globally and supported by notable institutions like the American Veterinary Medical Association for its ethical benefits and superior results in teaching canines. We ensure these methods are consistent and clear, providing an enjoyable learning experience for your dog at our Kansas City facility.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

The time it takes to see results varies depending on the dog's age, previous experiences, and the consistency of training at home. However, most pet parents notice improvements within a few sessions when applying the techniques they learn during classes. Consistency and patience are key; training is cumulative and each session builds upon the last. We encourage regular practice at home, and our trainers are always available to provide guidance for continued success.

What Happens in a Typical Training Session?

During a training session at Camp Bow Wow Kansas City Northland, we focus on exercises that address the specific needs and goals set for your dog. Each session typically starts with a review of previous lessons and progresses into new skills, ensuring a steady and manageable pace. Our trainers demonstrate techniques, followed by hands-on practice with feedback. This immersive learning helps reinforce positive behavior and encourages steady improvement over time.
